The most efficient way to address marine litter is to focus on the sources of plastic pollution and eliminate the pathways through which it leaks into the natural environment.
This requires prohibitting unnecessary plastics and microbeads as well as redesigned the plastic products that are necessary to increase their lifespan and make them easier to repair, reuse and recycle.
Further, potentially problematic chemicals should be eliminated from plastic production and recycling. Management of waste and wastewater management should be improved. Read more about solutions in the Nordic Report (2020).
